PG RCMP remind drivers to be best prepared for winter driving conditions

It might be a wise move for Prince George drivers to ease off the accelerator as the winter driving season is here to stay.

The northern capital saw four centimetres fall on Sunday night and have been stuck in a freeze-thaw cycle.

The local RCMP offered a few tips on what you can do to be best prepared for the conditions.

“Make sure you’ve got the proper tires on and make sure you have taken the time to have an ice scraper, scrape off your windows properly, clear off all the snow so that your visibility is good and have an emergency kit in the trunk,” said Craig Douglass, Corporal.

Motorists are encouraged to take a little extra to get ready and to slow down earlier in the day as the roads will most likely be a little slick over the next few months.

“We certainly find that drivers do need to adjust to the conditions get used to driving slower and be more cautious so that you give yourself some more time to get to where you’re going. I did find myself I found a couple of vehicles in the ditch that happened likely sometime overnight.”

Some of the reasons vehicles end up in the ditch this time of year include not having the proper tires and driving too fast for conditions according to police.

The roads will be a little dicey during the morning commute as overnight lows of minus twelve are expected tonight and tomorrow.

Douglass adds it’s always a good idea to have an emergency kit in the trunk if you happen to get stranded.
