WHL: (PG Cougars)

Victoria Royals  5  Prince George Cougars  1  (Saturday)

The Cougars three-game win streak came to an end as they suffered their 10th straight loss in games played in Victoria (0-7-1-2).

Kaid Oliver tallied twice and Gary Haden chipped in with three assists for the Royals, who erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring three goals in the second and two more in the third before 5,262 fans.

Nikita Krivokrasov scored the Cougars’ only goal, 4:09 into the first period.

Brock Gould turned aside 24 of 25 shots for Victoria while Taylor Gauthier was tagged with the loss, stopping 25 of 30 shots.

The Cougars visit the (18-13-1-2) Kelowna Rockets Monday night in their final game in 2019.

Prince George will start 2020 with home games against the (25-7-2) Everett Silvertips Friday and Saturday.

The (9-21-1-3) Cougars are 7 points behind the (12-16-4-1) Tri-City Americans and the
(13-18-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds, who share the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George Cougars  4  Everett Silvertips  3  (Friday)

Ilijah Colina (6) snapped a 3-3 tie at 2:34 of the third period.

 

Cariboo Cougars: 

The Cariboo Cougars are 2-1 at the Mac’s AAA Midget Hockey Tournament in Calgary after a 5-1 Saturday night victory over the Calgary Royals.

Cariboo put the game away early with four unanswered goals in the first.

(The Cougars had split their first two games, winning 7-2 over Airdrie CFR Bisons Thursday and losing 3-2 to the Moose Jaw Warriors Friday)

The Cougars will play their final round-robin game tonight at 7:00 (PT) against the (2-0) St. Albert Nektar Raiders.

When preliminary games wrap up on Monday, the top team from each of the five pools will qualify for playoffs and so will the three clubs with the next-best records.

The (17-5-1-1) Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team BCMML.

Cariboo will resume league play on the Jan. 11-12 weekend when they’ll be in Kelowna for a showdown with the first place Okanagan Rockets.

NHL: (9 Saturday games)

Vancouver Canucks  3  LA Kings  2

First time the Canucks have won a home game when giving up 50 shots.

Jacob Markstrom made 49 saves to lead the Canucks to their 4th straight victory.

LA outshot Vancouver 51-26.

The (20-15-4) Canucks play tonight at 6:30 PT in Calgary against the (20-15-5) Flames.

Vancouver is 4th in the tight Pacific Division, only a point back of the Flames.

World Jr. Hockey Championship:
(in the Czech Republic)

Russia  6  Canada  0

Worst loss (by goal margin) ever suffered by Canada at the World Jr. Tournament.

Both teams are 1-1.

Canadian star Alexis Lafreniere suffered a left knee injury in the second period, although the injury may not be as serious as first thought.

Canada, which won its opener 6-4 over the USA, will play its third round-robin game Monday morning at 6:00 (PT) against 1-1 Germany.

Mitch Love of Quesnel, the head coach of the Saskatoon Blades, is one of the assistant coaches for Team Canada under head coach Dale Hunter.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings play their next game Friday against the Rivermen in Langley.

The Spruce Kings will host the Surrey Eagles on Jan. 10th and 11th.

With 19 games left, the (13-21-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, three points behind (14-17-2-4) Surrey and six back of (17-17-1-1-1) Langley.

NFL:

There are 16 Sunday games to conclude the  NFL regular season.

The (11-4) Seattle Seahawks host the (12-3) San Francisco 49’ers tonight at 5:20 with the winner to finish first in the NFC West and the loser to play in the wild-card game.

NBA:

Toronto Raptors  113  Boston Celtics  97

The Raptors are 4th in the Eastern Conference, a game behind Boston and two back of Miami.

Toronto will host the (16-15) Oklahoma City Thunder today at 3:00 p.m. PT.

The (22-10) Raptors are 16-0 against teams below. 500 and 6-10 against teams above .500.
