PG Firefighters dealing with busy end to summer

Prince George Fire Chief John Iverson says the trio of fires over the Labour Day long weekend is not connected in any way.

Firefighters attended a pair of condo blazes on Central Street East and Ospika Boulevard, which combined for $225,000 worth of damage.

In addition, the RCMP is investigating a suspicious blaze at the old Aboriginal Infant Development Program building on George Street.

Iverson told MyPGNow.com a recent busy stretch like this at the end of summer isn’t overly common.

“This time of year is typically fairly quiet for us and a lot of times, people have issues with cooking fires. People are basically changing what they do with their habits, doing more stuff inside.”

“There are really no trends that I can identify. We start to see that more when it gets really cold in the wintertime. People are turning up their heat sources, using open flames to thaw pipes and those sorts of things – the electrical loads go up in the colder weather, right now, we are in the shoulder season.”

Prior to this, a fire that caused $200,000 worth of damage at the North Star Inn last month is also being looked at by police.

Lastly, a suspicious condo blaze on North Tabor Boulevard resulted in $100,000 in damages.
