2018 BC Major Midget Hockey Showcase not coming to Prince George

The Cariboo Cougars won’t be hosting the 2018 BC Major Midget Showcase.

The annual event invites BCMML teams to one venue to compete for three days.

Scouts can take a closer look at all these players without travelling all over BC.

The team asked the city for $50,000 to cover opponent’s travel and hotel fees, a price that was just too high for Mayor Lyn Hall and the rest of Council.

“The contingency fund only so much money in it and I think that was the concern around taking the $50,000 out of it and there may be an impact on other groups.”

Councillor Frank Everitt was on board with spending the money who says you’ve got to spend money to make it.

“That brings a lot of people into our community that are spending dollars and it’s all about attracting things to the city to make it grow and this was one of the ways that I thought would help us grow.”

Tourism PG crunched the numbers and believes the event could’ve brought about $167,000 into the city.
