Missing skier found dead after Valemount avalanche

The search for a missing Fernie man has come to a tragic end.

The 35-year-old was reported missing on Tuesday following an avalanche near Valemount.

Valemount RCMP say the man was found dead yesterday (Wednesday), buried in the avalanche debris field.

He was located by a Robson Valley Search and Rescue team.

Mounties report the class 3.5 avalanche occurred in the Swift Creek valley just north of Valemount on Tuesday afternoon.

The man was travelling with two other backcountry skiers at the time of the incident, both of whom were able to free themselves safely.

Emergency Services were notified immediately by one of the survivors activating an InReach satellite communication device.

The BC Coroners Service has assumed conduct of the investigation.
